Viltrox EF-M1 and EF-M2 adapters overview

For some time now I have been the proud owner of a camera on a micro 4/3 system. As with any camera, all expenses just begin with its purchase. You can buy lenses almost indefinitely.

OnViltrox EF-M2I consider buying lenses on a micro 4/3 system absolutely inappropriate. If you already own Canon lenses, the inexpensive Viltrox EF-M1 and EF-M2 adapters are a complete solution to your lens problem. You won't have to buy anything in addition to a new Panasonic or Olympus camera or a Blackmagic camera with the same mount. However, even if you do not have lenses on Canon EF mount, it will be more profitable and practical to buy them together with an adapter than to buy native Olympus / Panasonic lenses.

What is the difference between Viltrox EF-M1 and Viltrox EF-M2 adapters?Viltrox EF-M1 + panasonic g7Viltrox EF-M1 - adapter having only electronic connection to the lens. This device allows you to:

  • focus (point autofocus works fully);
  • control the diaphragm;
  • send exif information to the camera.

When attaching any Canon lens (EF or EF-S) to a camera with a micro 4/3 system via an adapter Viltrox EF-M1 you get a focal length equivalent to the original parameters multiplied by two. In other words, the standard crop factor for such a system is x2. That is, 50mm becomes 100mm, 14mm becomes 28mm, etc. Aperture values remain the same.Viltrox EF-M2 + panasonic g7Viltrox EF-M2 - an adapter that has an electronic connection to the lens and a magnifying lens... The EF-M2 does exactly the same thing as the M1, but you get no crop factor x2, x1.5... And the best part is that the aperture of the lenses installed in this way increases by 1 stop. There was fifty f1.4, now 75mm f1.0, 24-70mm f2.8, 36-105mm f2 etc. The bokeshka also becomes more blurred.

The only downside to the EF-M2 is that you cannot use EF-S lenses with it. They are not physically installed due to the longer flange distance.

Viltrox EF-M2 - full analogue Metabones speedbooster... The difference is that Viltrox EF-M2 costs 140 $, and the price of Metabones in our stores fluctuates around 450-800 $. You won't notice the difference in quality. About quality and features of use further.

Example 4K video recording on Canon EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 with adapter Viltrox EF-M1:

Photo inside the Vladimir Cathedral on Viltrox EF-M2:

Lenses used Samyang 14mm f2.8 и Canon 35mm f2.0IS... Samyang with the Viltrox EF-M2 adapter becomes a full-fledged width that can capture almost anything you want. at the same time, the sharp open aperture becomes f2, which allowed shooting at ISO 400 in a dark temple. Canon 35mm f2 turns into fifty kopecks f1.4, shot at ISO 200. It blurs the background well + has a stabilizer that works fine through an adapter. Pay attention to the last 2 frames: 14mm and 35mm bokeh. All photos in full resolution link.

The Viltrox EF-M2 lens adapter practically solves the micro 4/3 problem - that is, there is little bokeh and there is no wide-angle aperture. Viltrox EF-M2 + panasonic g7 + samyang 14mm f2.8Native glasses will cost around $ 1000, but here with a cheap fifty dollars and an adapter, you will have a perfectly blurred background, and wearing Samyang 14mm f / 2.8 Ed as If UMC you can get a good fast width. However, there is already a ready-made samyang for mikra (Samyang 12mm F2.0 ED AS NCS CS Micro 4/3) with good aperture and without an adapter, but you won't wear it anywhere else.

Should I choose Viltrox EF-M1 or Viltrox EF-M2?

Choosing between Viltrox EF-M1 и Viltrox EF-M2 you need to build on what optics you already have. If there are a lot of cropped glasses, then of course without Viltrox EF-M1 not enough... Canon EF-S 18-135mm f3.5-5.6 turns into a powerful super-zoom (36-270mm). For video filming, a very powerful tool: the stub works, 4K video is sharp and high-quality. But if you have full frame lenses, then Viltrox EF-M2 - just a fairy tale. You can shoot in very low light. you get unusually wide apertures. And the focal lengths of lenses are becoming convenient and working, because the x2 crop is a very specific thing. With x1.5 crop it is much more pleasant to shoot. I kept both adapters for myself.

Viltrox EF-M1 + Viltrox EF-M2Thus, if you are wondering how to wear a Canon lens (or another brand, but with an EF mount) on a Panasonic camera, the issue is effectively resolved with the Chinese Viltrox adapters. There are other Chinese analogues, but I cannot vouch for them. If you buy an adapter even cheaper, you can lose a lot in quality.
