Laowa 14mm f4 Zero-D Dreamer review

Laowa 14mm f / 4 FF RL Zero-D lens (Canon R) from Venus Optics is a super-compact ultra-wide angle lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. You can't attach it to a DSLR, I say right away :) Produced for Canon, Nikon, Sony mirrorless cameras.

The lens weighs only about 260 grams. Focusing is completely manual, as well as aperture control. There are no contacts with the camera.

The lens is made of metal and glass, there is no plastic. Has a built-in lens hood that prevents the use of light filters. If desired, filters can still be installed, but inconvenient. Thread diameter 52mm.

Optically good. The main drawback is vignetting, which doesn't come with closing the aperture. The edges will always be darkened, which can be easily corrected in the editor. The sharpness is very good, there are no chromatic aberrations. The distortion is minimal, almost imperceptible.

All in all, highly recommend for travel photographers. For shooting landscapes - it is. This is an unusually light lens that still delivers excellent image quality. Can also be used in interior, wedding and reportage photography.

In my video review, I compared Laowa 14mm f4 Zero-D с Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L III и Sigma EX 12-24mm f4.5-5.6:

Pergear 10mm f8 fisheye review

I'll tell you about the most compact lens I've ever reviewed. Pergear 10mm f8 fisheye significantly less than Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM or even less cropped Fujifilm XF 27mm f2.8. This is a really small lens.

pergear 10mm f2.8 fish-eye vs fujinon 27mm f2.8

Pergear 10mm f8 fisheye comes in a small box that reminds me of a box to light filters.

At the time of writing the review was available for sale Pergear 10mm f8 fisheye for the following mounts:

I tested on Fujifilm X-S10.

What is this lens?

The title indicates that it is fish-eye... As if yes, but not quite. The angle of view is wide, but it does not reach a full-fledged fish. Distortion is present, but again not to the extent that the same Samyang 8mm f2.8 fisheye.

I took a few frames to show this difference:

pergear vs samyang

Incidentally, white balance settings were the same. Such a noticeable difference in color temperature due to different optics.

Can be used simply as a super-compact and inexpensive wide-angle. Distortion can be corrected in Lightroom for an almost even image. Why almost? Because there is no profile for this lens, and correction from other fish-eye lenses does not always work completely correctly.

This is how the photo looks after the distortion correction.

pergear test

Manual focusing. Focusing is done by moving a small lever with a stroke of approximately 45 degrees. Not a very accurate instrument, but given the wide angle and f8, it's not difficult. If you shoot landscapes, you can work at infinity all the time.

pergear 10mm f8

Aperture is always constant f8... During the day, there are no problems. In the evening or in a dark room, you only have to take pictures with a tripod. Video in the evening would be a bad idea with this lens.

Image quality.

The Pergear 10mm f8 behaves differently depending on the focusing distance. At infinity, the lens is very sharp almost over the entire field of the frame, which is good news. At the minimum focusing distance (about which there is not even a hint of bokeh), the lens turns into a soft-focusing lens. I would not say that this is a big drawback for such glass. By the way, I liked it for taking selfies with outstretched arms, it is quite convenient for both photos and videos.

It should be noted that even at its dark / closed aperture, this lens has a noticeable vignetting.

Total

Considering the price and compactness of this lens, I can safely recommend it to a wide range of photographers. It is worth trying, this is an interesting lens that has no analogues and even more so for such a ridiculous price.

This lens left a much more positive impression on me than Pergear 12mm f2which has strong optical problems.

Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM review on Canon R5

canon ef 28-105 f3.5-4.5Welcome to the first version of the Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM lens, released in 1992. There was also a re-release of the Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II, which differs only externally (and even then not much).

It's funny that the Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 came with a film camera Canon EOS 5, and now - almost 20 years later - I am reviewing this film lens with digital full frame mirrorless. Canon EOS-R5.

Externally

This is a very compact (72 * 75 mm) and lightweight lens (375 g), strongly resembling in appearance Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM... The same small filter diameter - 58mm and a tightly assembled plastic case.

Metal mount unlike newer, but worse Canon EF 28-105mm f/ 4.0-5.6 USM (not recommended for purchase).
canon ef 28-105mm
The lens has a focusing distance scale. A trifle, but nice.

canon ef 28-105mm f3.5-4.5-2

The zoom ring rotates relatively easily, but when filming a video there are jerks that I showed in this video.

Auto focus

The focusing system is very pleasing. Focuses very quickly and quietly. On modern cameras, autofocus is suitable for both photo and video.

The minimum focusing distance of 50cm is not very comfortable. You won't be able to shoot very large with this lens.

Image quality

  • The main disadvantage of this lens is low contrast and faded colors. I had review on a similar Canon EF 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 USMwhere the same problem was.
  • Sharpness is decent at all focal lengths, straight from open aperture. There is a drop in detail along the edges, which does not go all the way even with closed apertures.
  • The bokeh is nice, at 100mm f4.5 you can get good portraits, but you still need to think about the background, unlike 85mm f1.2L.
  • Chromatic aberrations are naturally present. They didn't strike me much. IN Lightroom corrected quickly by clicking the Remove Chromatic Aberration checkbox.
  • Distortion is also present and quite strong. Moreover, it manifests itself both at the wide and at the long end. But it has a uniform character, so it is also amenable to adjustment. Regarding adjustments, unfortunately, Lightroom does not have a profile for this lens, although the Canon R5 recognizes it and writes about it in the menu.

Who is the Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM for?

  • Если вам нужен temporary lensto understand focal lengths and understand what to buy next - yes, this is a good option so as not to overpay for expensive L-lenses. By the way, I think the EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 is a better choice compared to the frankly cheap plastic Canon RF 24-105mm f4.5-7.1 STM. Also do not recommend Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 STM (disgusting AF and zoom).
  • If you shoot with additional lighting (flash or constant light), then the choice of lens fades into the background. Light comes first. So, by the way, I decided to keep the EF 28-105mm.
  • If you want to optional, lightweight and compact lens for work... For example, I have good L prime lenses, like Canon EF 50mm f1.2L USM и Canon EF 135mm f2L USM. For reportage shooting, to complement the focal lengths and not carry anything heavy, I can take a Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM (with flash, if indoors). I also took this lens for shooting football along with Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L.

Who DOES NOT fit the Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM

If you expect that for that kind of money you get a cool lens, then no - it is not. Canon EF 24-105mm f4L outperforms it in everything. Especially in color reproduction, color saturation and micro contrast. When buying a lens like this, you are making a compromise. Especially disadvantages EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 will appear in difficult, insufficient, chaotic lighting. If you don't control the light, then the result will be so-so (although this rule applies to anything in photography / videography).

The Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM doesn't shoot beautifully on its own. For it to work well, you need good lighting, as I wrote about above. Therefore, I cannot recommend it to novice professionals.
