Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM review

I was very curious to take a closer look at the super-compact and super-wide Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM. And now, thanks to the store abc photo I have such an opportunity.

I did tests (photos and videos) and compared this lens with others, namely with Canon EF 16-35mm f2.8L III, Laowa 14mm f4 Zero-D и Pergear 10mm f8 FishEye. All of these lenses have reviews on my YouTube channel.

As for Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM, then its jamb consists in a huge distortion. If you watch RAW files from this lens, then it looks more like fishyethan wide-angle.

But after the corrections (which the camera makes automatically), you won't even guess about it. The truth is revealed only when raw files are processed in the editor. This is a payment for compactness and relatively low price.

The STM autofocus motor is quiet and fast - no issues with it.


I can recommend this lens to most photographers and videographers, despite the fishery nuance. In practice, he shows himself very well.

Canon EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM Is a full frame lens for Canon DSLRs, released in 2012 alongside the Canon EF 24mm f2.8 IS USM and Canon EF 35mm f2 IS USM. All of these lenses are very good optically. They also have a plus in the form of effective optical stabilization. The choice is only for the focal length. In this article, we will talk about 28mm.

The focal length of 28mm is roughly the same (equivalent) to that of standard cameras in phones. It's a wide angle, but not too wide. With a lens like this, you won't feel the problem of drooping sides / corners and, at the same time, it is quite easy to shoot with it. The frame will fit approximately what you see in front of you without significant distortion. It is not without reason that this field of view was chosen as the standard one for mobile devices. On the other hand, as an experienced photographer with such a lens, I am frankly bored. It doesn't give you the opportunity to play with wide-angle perspective and shoots pretty mundanely.

Speaking of optical qualities, Canon EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM - shows itself very well already from an open aperture of f2.8. Covering the aperture slightly improves the edges of the image, but even when the aperture is open, they cannot be called soapy. The Canon R5 easily "resolves" all 45 megapixels. Moreover, this lens was recommended by the manufacturer for the Canon 5DsR with its 51 megapixels.  Sample photos and tests are in the video review at the end of the article.

Built-in optical image stabilization compensates for up to 4 stops of exposure. In fact, with a lens like this, you can shoot handheld at night. reasonable ISO around 1000. But I would still strongly recommend using tripod for night landscape photography. Optical stabilization also allows for quite comfortable shoot a video from hands, shaking is compensated quite confidently.

  • The lens has small dimensions and weight, which is a definite plus.
  • Focusing is quiet and average in speed.

Briefly about the previous model 28mm f2.8

Previously, I had an older version (1987 of release) of this lens - Canon EF 28mm f2.8... It does not have a USM motor, which makes the focusing process quite noticeable - in terms of sound and speed. The previous version has a weaker construct. Although both lenses are made of plastic, the quality of the material is different. The newer Canon EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM feels tighter and more expensive. Optically they are similar, but the new one will have a slightly better sharpness at the edges when open. The updated EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM has an optical stabilizer, which is very nice in some situations. The old EF 28mm f2.8 feels cheap and old, the more modern EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM will be more fun to own. This is how I would describe the difference between them. Photos will be +/- the same.

Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM in brief

There is another ancient lens - Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM... It was released in 1995. I also had it. It's nice that there is a USM motor, so it focuses relatively quickly and quietly. But the trouble is with the sharpness. The lens was clearly not designed for use with digital cameras. Even covering the diaphragm did not give satisfactory results. But with an aperture of f1.8, when shooting at close distances, you get significantly more bokeshki compared to f2.8. Today I would no longer recommend it for purchase.

Review fisheye TTartisan 7.5mm

Fisheye lenses or fisheye, as they used to say, are quite specific due to their characteristics. Nevertheless, a huge variety of them began to appear recently. This review will focus on a relatively new TTartisan 7.5mm f2 FishEye.

What are the advantages of the TTartisan 7.5mm f2?

Everything is simple here. This is an inexpensive lens with an unusually high aperture ratio for its class. The aperture of f2.0 allows shooting in lower light, and also blurs the background quite well when focusing at close distances.


This is a metal lens that is tightly assembled. Feels weighty, although by the standards of a full frame it weighs nothing - 370g.

An ND 1000 filter is supplied with the lens, which is screwed on from the side of the bayonet mount. With this filter, you can shoot long exposures in daylight. This technique allows you to get unusual effects in photographs. Landscape / architecture photographers will appreciate this opportunity. I want to note that when using the ND filter, focusing at infinity on the lens scale shifts from 1m to about 30cm.

Image quality

Fisheye is an ultra wide angle lens without any distortion correction. Therefore, you will get images with a specific perspective. But, as far as detail is concerned, it is always very high in the center and in the middle of the frame. Sharpness is weak at the edges at open apertures. At f8-f10, the lens is super-sharp from edge to edge.

The minimum focusing distance for this lens is 15cm, which allows you to do almost macro photography with a strong background blur. According to this parameter, the TTartisan 7.5mm f2 is very different from the well-proven Samyang 8mm f2.8 FishEye, which has an MDF of about 0cm.

Looking at the photo below, I myself am surprised that this was filmed with a fish-eye.

By the way, this lens still copes very well with astrophotography... The combination of ultra-wide angle and high aperture allows you to take very interesting photographs of the sky.astro photography on fisheyeTotal

Overall, the TTartisan 7.5mm f2 FishEye is a very positive experience. The lens can do much more than its counterparts, while it costs quite reasonable money. I recommend to everyone. I decided to sell my Samyang 8mm f2.8 FishEye in favor of the new TTartisan 7.5mm f2 FishEye.
